With the recent buzz over DC’s icon Wonder Woman redesign by JMS & Jim Lee, I decided to try my hand at it.As with images I post, you can click on the image to see an enlarge version.

I returned to more of what I envision of Wonder Woman’s build and costume. Pants and boots… my favorite so far.

With this version, I made only very subtle alterations to the original Wonder Woman costume. Still not sure anything should be changed from the original for this icon.

One of my first attempt. My attempt at capturing the essence of JMS’s Wonder Woman redesign intentions. Ended up not really appearing “modern” per se,, instead more reminiscent of a go go dancer.

Ink version and maybe a color version to come…

Flash Gordon – A Tribute to Al Williamson

Sadly another of comic’s legend has passed away earlier this week. As many others influenced by Mr. Williamson’s accomplishments, I was deeply moved to do a tribute piece. Here’s my attempt at drawing Flash Gordon mimicking Al Williamson’s style as best I could muster. I know it pales to his work in too many ways to mention, I finished the whole piece from pencil to ink in record time for me – 8 hrs!
Inked on 11″x17″ Bristol Board.

R.I.P. – Al Williamson.

Athena Voltaire vs. Anubis’ Army of Mummies

First of all, if you haven’t checked out Athena Voltaire, you’re missing out on one of the most pulpy comic book goodness of our time. Created by my friend and collaborator, Steve Bryant, the books unveil the story of an adventure-bound aviatrix who encounters all sorts of mysteries in the veins of Indiana Jones.

When Athena was named the theme for ComicTwart contributors, an art blog made up of several fantastic industry artists, I jumped at the chance to do my own play-along version. What you may notice on my inked version of “Athena Voltaire vs. Anubis’ Army of Mummies” is that Anubis’ body is solid black unlike the pencils. During the inking stage, I noticed that the details of his body contour was distracting and the solid black helped frame Athena better as the focus center.

Finished piece inked solid and with a bit of ink wash on 11″x17″ Bristol board.

The very funny crew of Half Hour Wasted podcast graciously extended me an invitation for me to join them for another recording. Of course, I never pass up on an opportunity for me to gab… HHW joins me on a pizza run and talk more about Ursula Wilde free comic book day issue.

I would highly suggest trying out HHW episode 50, still one of my favorite episode ever. While on their website, you can also check out Legion of Dudes podcast, a ensemble of comic enthusiasts who have done an in-depth multi-episode discussion of Watchmen graphic novel.

Bryan Deemer has been working hard on revamping the Comic Geek Speak’s website. In his effort to adding more excitement to the frontpage, he asked several artists to submit original art. Kid Midas – Coloring Contest for a Chance to Get Published!

Eric White, a friend from the CGS forums, approached me for drawing the cover for the third CGS anthology book. The name of the character is Kid Midas, a golden robot created by powerful beings called Visionaries.
Here’s the description he gave me:

Kid Midas: A kid robot, built by a Visionary of an alternate universe and crossed over to this universe, he now hangs out with this Visionary and enjoys being the sidekick to the greatest hero on the planet. Midas is a golden robot, built by the techno-god of the other universe. He uses a metal slingshot and is an expert shot, sending little balls of golden fire at his enemies.
He is extremely agile and loves to take chances, much to Visionary’s dismay. I see him as a steam-robot, so if you get a design where you want to place steam vents in unlikely (or likely places) like his knees, hips, or shoulders, that’d be cool.

Just wanted to let everyone know that my family and I are doing fine in the aftermath of tropical storm IKE. We definitely don’t have it as bad as many people down in the coast. Because we were in the direct path of IKE’s north-bound progress, we have been without power since yesterday. I’ll post some other news, but for now, I’m doing what I can with the remaining juice of my cell phone. Pray for all the victims.

Fallen Heroes Gains Traction!

A great friend and a fantastic British author Barry Nugent had commissioned me a while back to create the cover to his self-published novel Fallen Heroes. It was my first-ever book cover design and thoroughly enjoyed working with Barry through the process. As dedicated as Barry had been in promoting the book, it is only recently that he is finally beginning to see some forward progress on his book.

After the Branch Manager of Waterstone’s Northampton stocked some signed copies in the store, she reports great response. I am so excited for Barry and wish that this is only a beginning to even greater things to come. I do recommend this book highly and suggest you try out some preview pages right here. You can even order your very own copy from the same page.

Steve Bryant of Athena Voltaire fame, working closely with Molly McBride, has asked me to take on the role of pencils and inks for the upcoming project Urusla Wilde! After mere cursory look through the pitch and the scripts, I am on board! Although he had originally intended to do the writing and the art chores himself, with Athena Voltaire being back in regular schedule, he decided to look for an alternative.

Although I don’t have the distinct gracefulness in the way Steve draws women, I jumped at the opportunity because I believe I can bring my A-game to the table. I should add that the simple opportunity to collaborate with Steve alone would have been reason enough for me to accept the job. Through each interaction with Steve, my respect for him as a person and a comic creator grows witnessing first hand his humility, kindness & fairness.

As far as the work is concerned, I LOVE the dynamics and the energy Steve, Molly and I have in collaboration. Great things are to come from this, my friends.

I have finished my version of the character sketches for the main team and have already begun work on pages for issue one. The first miniseries is subtitled “Sorcerer Pope” and will be published by Ape Entertainment. Those interested can read up on existing contents and follow the progress and news by visiting the Ursula Wilde Production Diary. I will be adding some new images in the coming weeks.

JunBob, A Comic Genius?

When your friend knows somebody that knows somebody that is somebody that works at the newspaper… and he drops them story lead… and the paper approaches you for a Sunday paper human interest story… what do you think you’ll say? Well, I’d say the idea of getting interviewed by the local newspaper is TOTALLY GENIUS!!! Oh, how little did I know that the Longview News Journal writer Glen Evans would use the word in the actual word in the title.

So as wonderful as the article was with 2 pages chock full of words and images, that wonderful choice of words for the title just armed my dear friends with enough ammo to give me continual grief for the next decade.

All jokes aside, this was a tremendous honor and helped finally validate my comic art interest with my parents. Thank you ShawnO for hooking me up!

Dallas Comic Con – A Weekend to Remember

Dallas Comic Con… it’s a small size, family environment convention that usually serves as an “excuse” for me to be able to go out of town and hang out with a group of guys. Not only a chance to spend some needed time with my homie Shawn Ormes, and the Half Hour Wasted hosts Brad Milyo and Frank Rincon. I was planning on doing some 50 cent bin diving and meeting a few comic book celebrities such as Steve Niles, Terry Moore, Tim Bradstreet, Bob Layton, Cully Hamner, Scott Kurtz, etc. The show was a blast and getting to meet fellow HHW listener Bob Heine was great too.

What I did not know was that on Saturday evening I would be given the honor of getting to know better the comic legend himself – Bob Layton! Not only was Bob generous enough to spare his time to critic my portfolio but gave us (Shawn, Brad, Frank, and I) a chance to dine with him and his assistant, the fabulous Sorah Suhng, at the Korea House restaurant that evening. To top it off, my lovely wife Krista joined us later that evening.

Well, today marked the day! It was my long-awaited Naturalization ceremony, during which I officially became a U.S. Citizen! It was 1985 since we left my birthplace of South Korea… and it truly has been a long road! I have so much to be thankful for… and so many people to thank that made this possible. Many of you that have commissioned me for artworks have played a part in my accumulating the necessary funds to pay for the process. THANK YOU. This is a happy day!

Marvel/DC ZombieFest in Technocolor!

Alright, a few of the fellow posters from Comic Geek Speak forum took up the challenge. For a while, pocosong seemed to be the only one that making any real gain… it seems though even he was bitten by the lack-of-time bug. Out of no where, a DC colorist jumped in and rose to the occasion. His name? Allen. aka angryf. aka graphics84. His site? http://www.angryf.com. In his blog, he showcases the color image that he knocked out of the park.

Fairwell, CBI3!

Well, I have permanently decided to put aside the CBI3 assignments. All the controversies over voting improperly reflecting true talents at the main contest… I don’t think that the “Play-at-Home” threads are really getting any real attention from the editors and judges. Not that I’m complaining about that aspect… as it’s only fair that the main attention needs to be given to the guys in the competition.

The decision really came more from me finally stopping myself from this personal emotional roller-coaster of an event and get my butt back in gear with some real offers already on the table for me by guys like Kevin Grevioux (Underworld, New Warriors, etc.), Mike San Giacomo (Phantom Jack) and Steve Bryant (Athena Voltaire).

Well, I know that this may come as a shock to those of you returning to my site… but I’ve managed to finally launch an updated site. I’ve had some complaints from some visitors that the old Flash-based interface caused problems. Hopefully, the new design with the updated, separate Gallery is easier to navigate for most people.

Oh, well… I guess I should have known. With over 190+ entries, I was NOT one of the ten (nor top 12 or so) selected to participate on CBI3. Kinda depressed… thought I really had some real chance this year. Gosh, this sucks… kinda sucks the will out of wanting to continue drawing. I guess I should have listened to Kevin Grevioux’s advice to just stay away from the contest. Shucks!

CGS Coloring Contest

Comic Book Idol 3?

Well, the first one I missed the cutoff for nominations. The second, I was never considered for the nomination. I’m almost torn whether I need to try it again for the third contest much like the comic artist contest version of the TV’s American Idol. However, the free trip to New York Comic Con and a chance to get to meet some editors and pros alike was worth the effort, I’d figure… Here goes nothing.

Despite the unattentive shuttle service at express parking and crazy lines at airport security, Brad, Frank and I have mde the flight. Smooth flight with a few quirks of people grabbing whatever seats they want. It's sunny and around 70 degrees here at 11AM. After the rental car, we're gonna kill about an hour or two before picking up Austin.
