About
Jun Kim
aka, Jun Bob Kim and Junkyeong Kim
Even from early childhood, I have been drawing on every blank surface I encountered, much to the dismay of my parents. Fearing my potential demise as a “starving artist”, my well-meaning parents initially discouraged my ever-growing ambition. Despite the absence of formal art education, the burning desire for drawing never left.
Throughout the learning years, every notebook, paper scraps, napkins (and even textbooks) were not spared from serving as my canvas. My early interests were mainly in illustrating sports cars, He-Man, Thundercats, monster trucks, and Man-hwa; however, my love of sequential art birthed with the purchase of my first American comic book – Uncanny X-Men #271.
During college, I illustrated and designed every chance I had, serving as the editorial cartoonist for the school publication and the sole-commissioned artist for the college marketing. My first sequential art project Holy War was published via the university newspaper during 1992 to 1995. Even with the limitations of the publishing format, Holy War earned an honorable mention for the Regional Collegiate Publishing Award, competing with publications from mega schools, such as Texas A&M and University of Texas.
After an eight year hiatus from comics, I picked up the drawing tools once again in 2002. Since then, my art has been published in several publications, including the cover to premiere issue of Comics NOW! magazine, and 5-page Cipher / Ursula Wilde story in Ape Entertainment’s FCBD book Cartoonpalooza #2. With the art chores completed for issue one, I am currently working on penciling and inking the remainder of 3-part mini-series of Cipher: The Sorcerer Pope, my collaboration project with Steve Bryant. Based out of East Texas, I try my best to balance my comics workload with his wife and 11-years old son, a full time job, freelance graphics and multimedia design, church and art commissions.
